Big Idea: Angels and Demons are real and both play a part in God’s plan of salvation.
We began by discussing our conceptions of angels and demons, and what our culture says about both of these.
Angels
Psalm 8:4-5
Angels are created a little higher than humans in some sense
Job 38:4-7
The angels sang together and shouted for joy as God created earth (They are capable of emotion)
Acts 27:23-24
Angels are messengers, and they have been used by God to communicate with His people (now He does so through His Word).
Daniel 7:10
There are countless angels.
Matthew 18:10
God uses angels to care for us (not necessarily 1 guardian angel)
Hebrews 13:1-2
While angels do not have flesh and bones, they can appear in human form. It is possible we could interact with angels without realizing it!
Matthew 26:53
The angels are at the beckon call of Jesus
Luke 15:10
Angels rejoice when someone is saved from their sin.
Couple other things…
- Angels are highly organized and divided into ranks and tasks - cherubim, seraphim, archangel, living creatures
- Because angels were created before man and never die, they are incredibly old.
Demons
Luke 11:24
demons can possess a person
Leviticus 20:27
It seems that demons can make it possible to communicate with the spirit world
Matthew 12:22-26
Jesus showed authority over demons, but was accused of having demonic power; There is a battle going on between evil demons (Satan) and Christ; Christ has plundered the power of Satan
1 Timothy 4:1-3
One of the primary ways in which Satan uses demons today is spreading false doctrine
Mark 9:25-29
Our weapons against the spiritual forces are faith, prayer and fasting.
Matthew 25:41
The eternal destiny of Satan and his demons is hell.

There are elect angels (those who were chosen for good); There were apparently those who were not elect and became evil

Angels were created with a position of authority, but rebelled and followed Satan

To understand the origin of demons, we must also look at Satan’s origin -
Couple things we know…
- Satan is a created being (no one has existed eternally but the Father, Son and Spirit.
- All that God created was good in its original form (Genesis 1)
- Somewhere between Genesis 1-3, Satan became an evil being
Luke 10:17-18
Satan had a fall from heaven at some point…
Revelation 12:9
Satan has angels that followed him in rebelling against God (Jude 1:6); it also seems that angels do not die...
Isaiah 14:12-17
- Lucifer was called “Day Star” and “the son of the Dawn”
- Lucifer wanted to be greater than God (pride)
- Lucifer was “cut down to the ground”; “brought down to Sheol”
- Satan will face ultimate humiliation
Ezekiel 28:11-19
- Lucifer was beautiful and wise
- Lucifer had a perfect environment
- Lucifer was an anointed guardian cherub
- Lucifer dwelt on the holy mountain of God
- Lucifer was blameless (until unrighteousness was found in him)
- Lucifer was proud (because of his beauty)
- Lucifer sought his own glory
- Lucifer was “cast down to the ground”
A couple main things to remember...
- Angels are God’s servants who minister to those inheriting salvation (Hebrews 1:13-14)
- Demons are Satan’s servants who oppose the salvation of God (Eph. 6:11-12)
- We are God’s servants who inherit salvation, intrigue angels and conquer demons (Heb. 1:13, 1 Peter 1:10-12, Matt. 16:18)

through suffering - God may not protect us from suffering, but He will protect our soul

that pleases God (instead of man - Pharisees described as “hypocrites”)
