We began a brand new series on Authority. This is part of an over-arching series on Spiritual Warfare. Before we talk about the battle that wages, we need to consider what the 2 sides are, and whose side we are on? Who is in charge of each side?
And so last night we looked at how Jesus is Lord and what His authority means.
Big Idea: Jesus is Lord and I must submit to His loving authority.
We talked about what the word "lord" means in 3 different languages 0
"lord" (Old English) - "loaf-keeper", or someone who feeds dependents.
"Lord" (Greek) - "Kύριος - having (legal) power - used of Roman officials; could use the words master/owner
This is the word that is used in the 1st passage of Scripture we looked at.
- As Lord Jesus owns everything including us (Romans 10:9-13) Since "kurios" means "owner" or "master", we read the passage substituting those words, and we then asked the question - "Can we accept Jesus as Savior (to take away our sins) but not confess Him as Lord (recognize Him as owner of us). The answer from the students after looking at the passage was a resounding "no". We also considered Luke 9:23-24 Jesus "owning" us would be a bad thing if he was not a good master. But we can rest assured that God has our best interest in mind, and He will always take care us.
- As Lord Jesus can always be trusted to care for us (Exodus 16:1-21)
"LORD" (Hebrew) - Yahweh (“I am that I am” - same name God used with Moses at burning bush) - existence, eternal nature, everlasting covenant with His people

High School - "Proverbs - Biblical Womanhood"
Just as we talked about last week with Biblical manhood, our idea of what a woman is supposed to be has been twisted by the culture around us. Beauty is worshiped (not inner beauty).
And yet, Proverbs 31:30 says "Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised."
Big Idea: Skillful, Christ-like living requires understanding Biblical womanhood
10 aspects of godly womanhood (from Proverbs 31):
- Trustworthiness (vs. 11-12)
- Hard Work - industrious (13-19,27)
- Nurture (15,21,27)
- Compassion/Generosity (20,26)
- Strength (17,25)
- Dignity (25)
- Wisdom (26)
- Good Reputation (28)
- Fear of God (30)
- Peace (19:13; 21:9; 27:15)
It is important to recognize that for our young ladies, they need Jesus in them and His character to come through them in order to be a godly woman. It is my prayer that God builds these character traits into our young ladies.
For our guys, I told them they need to add these things to their list of what they are looking for in a godly mate.
