This past Tuesday we continued our study on Jesus Christ. We began by watching a video where people on the street were interviewed about who they thought Jesus Christ was. There were some really interesting (and sad) comments on the video, but I believe it was an honest representation of what people actually believe. We can only know who Jesus really is by looking at Jesus' claims He made about Himself. So that was our focus on Tuesday. Each of the groups looked at several Scriptures and then we compiled the claims of Christ. Here are some of them:
Matthew 26:50-64 and Luke 22:63-70
- “I can summon angels.”
- “I am the Messiah, the Son of God.”
- “You will see me seated at the right hand of God, and I will come back in the clouds of heaven.”
- “I came from God, and He sent me”
- “God is my Father”
- “God seeks my glory, He glorifies me”
- “If anyone keeps my word, he will never die.”
- “I know God and you do not.”
- “I existed before Abraham, I am eternal.”
- (earlier in 8:29) - “I always please God.”
- “I know God and He knows me (He is my Father).”
- “I will lay down my life, and then take it up again. I have this authority.”
- “I can give eternal life, and secure people’s salvation.”
- “I am one with God”
- “God consecrated me and sent me into the world.”
- “God the Father is in me and I am in Him.”
- “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can get to God unless they come through me.”
We finished the night by considering C.S. Lewis' Trilemma ("Lord, Liar or Lunatic") Here is what C.S. Lewis proposed:
"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. ... Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God."

My prayer is that our students see that Jesus claimed to be God, and He is God!!
High School - "What Defines You"
This was another great video lesson that got to the heart of who we are. We are defined by what is inside of us. And who we are inside comes out in the way we live. We learned that we can be defined by the stuff we have, or relationships we are in, or anything that is really important to us. One of the ways to know if anything is "defining us", is to ask the question - "would I be angry if it was taken away from me?".
This was challenging, and in the small group time afterwards students were challenged to evaluate what in their life might be defining them other than Jesus Christ. They were even challenged to find a couple people they trust and ask them for advice what they might need to change in their life. My hope is that some of our students actually took that challenge seriously. Those can be tough conversations to have, but important ones.
